American AI is locked down and proprietary. It's losing.
China's open-weights AI strategy is winning: its companies are taking the lead. America's closed-first, locked-down strategy is doomed to failure - and it could take the US economy down with it.

Judge approves a $1.5B Anthropic settlement over books used to train Claude
A federal judge has approved a $1.5 billion copyright settlement involving AI company Anthropic. The company will pay thousands of authors about $3,000 per book for using pirated copies to train its Claude chatbot. On Monday, District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín said the settlement provides “meaningful relief” to affected authors and publishers. About 91% of the 482,000 covered works have been claimed. Plaintiff attorney Justin Nelson called it "the largest known copyright recovery in history." The case began when bestselling novelist Andrea Bartz and two other authors filed the suit in 2024.
